it's good to have an end to journey towards, but it is the journey that matters, in the end ....

man i am writing after a long time

was so busy watching all sorts of horror movies..ring, grudge ..that crazy and yuckie freddie vs jackson ...saw one fundu movie - seven and one cute one - chasing liberty ...cudnt complete meet the parents coz i had to clear some disk space for more movies :))
dirty dancing is a sweet movie too...like the dances there ;)
humdum is a cool movie too....lets see the list today
meanwhile managed to write my paper and poster and journel paper...now i guess i have to start wrapping - data, code, clothes, cooler and other stuff...
---
the reading room here is a heaven ..infact i and ansh have started to sleep in there ...yest night it was so cold that though i had my rug on me i was shivering ..i had to actually switch off the fan..its an irony that just two wings away and floors away my room is hotter than the sahara desert..while that room is as cold as a dessert - okay its crappy humour and crappy blog so why are you reading it baby!

almost done with my clearance

today. must say ..this was one of the most tiring ordeal of iitk. mocho had his defence today it was quite impressive. not the presentation but primarily the work. there is one thing that always hold true...if you have a good wrk presentation doesnot matter that much.

lotsa catching up

Hey have submitted my thesis ..wow what a joyride that was ..the last few hours..anyways didnt know that fate hd planned bigger joyrides for next few days ...
one was clearance for the institute ..i and madaan dtifully left GH at 9 am to get all the signatures..visited places that i didnt even know existed in iit - glass blowing lab to what not...got 12 signatures that day .. quite a feat in half a day ...need to get the GH clearance done too....
had spent 1 whole day with cherry..it was fun catching up and talking ...generally...a good break from work..
today i am back to my thesis work...abhi my guide had called us for dinner..the food was simply great and the ice cream and jalebi too..however the real treat was to see how loving Ska is with his wife ...i really love the chemistry between them..its good to see people in real love esp at the age theyare coz you that the love has been time tested....and that coming from a man who is the most reserved and feared guy in CSE depmnt of iitk.

how to give a bad presentation

Ten commandments (with annotations gleaned from Patterson's talk by Mark D. Hill):

  1. Thou shalt not be neat

Why waste research time preparing slides? Ignore spelling, grammar and legibility. Who cares what 50 people think?

  2. Thou shalt not waste space

Transparencies are expensive. If you can save five slides in each of four talks per year, you save $7.00/year!

  3. Thou shalt not covet brevity

Do you want to continue the stereotype that engineers can't write? Always use complete sentences, never just key words. If possible, use whole paragraphs and read every word.

  4. Thou shalt cover thy naked slides

You need the suspense! Overlays are too flashy.

  5. Thou shalt not write large

Be humble -- use a small font. Important people sit in front. Who cares about the riff-raff?

  6. Thou shalt not use color

Flagrant use of color indicates uncareful research. It's also unfair to emphasize some words over others.

  7. Thou shalt not illustrate

Confucius says ``A picture = 10K words,'' but Dijkstra says ``Pictures are for weak minds.'' Who are you going to believe? Wisdom from the ages or the person who first counted goto's?

  8. Thou shalt not make eye contact

You should avert eyes to show respect. Blocking screen can also add mystery.

  9. Thou shalt not skip slides in a long talk

You prepared the slides; people came for your whole talk; so just talk faster. Skip your summary and conclusions if necessary.

  10. Thou shalt not practice

Why waste research time practicing a talk? It could take several hours out of your two years of research. How can you appear spontaneous if you practice? If you do practice, argue with any suggestions you get and make sure your talk is longer than the time you have to present it.

Commandment X is most important. Even if you break the other nine, this one can save you.

honie i shrunk the rajamas

today in mess i was wondering what they had cooked. Its sunday afternoon and they give us a choice between sambhar and rajama and i invariably choose sambhar...
today they gave us both (prob because of the holidays) but the curry that we had did not have rajamas but something very very small .. i thought it was some sort of pulses until i ate them and found them to be our good(?) old rajamas ..

didnt talk about farewell

hey i didnt tell about my farewell party given by our juniors..it was great ..i got titles for buying the first ferrari , never coming back from US ( : (( ), and the person to be stranded with...
had fun playing games especially the one where we had to fill the bottle with water :). It was fun. and the musical chairs that we had demonstrated the true spirit of sportsmanship that our class had...we wouldnt get up from chair music or no music.
had a small game show for Mr and Ms Mtech 2003 that jaya and mocho won (not respectively)....i was completely in splits when rawat was describing his funda of P and NP

hey

got another bookey of roses :)

thesis work

I don't know this site has become my cribbing site ..i have suddenly started feeling that my thesis is insignificant ..just discussed preti's mocho's and niraj's thesis ..they have contributed something positive that is reporducable ..mine is of a very diff nature ..not much thinking gone into it :(((..
came from cadence interview..they called us at 9 in the morning and didnt let us go until 5.30 and interviewed for only 6 mins!!!!!!!!!!!!
the interview room was a round table with 12 sleepy profs with only one (the head of the committee) asking fundamental question -he asked me what is innovative about your thesis and i had nothing concrete to say :'''((((..it was however funny because somehow the urgency of getting over with it had caught on me also so i was speaknig so fast that i had to once pause to catch my breath ..and this was true for other pple also who gave the interview ...anyways my bets are on niraj ..he has worked hard on a right problem and he is also good at his work! Mocho was good too but his CPI is relatively low and these guys are seeing CPI also - that's cheap!
Anyway the food in VH was great with some apple juice also :)))
