it's good to have an end to journey towards, but it is the journey that matters, in the end ....

rm -rf

am my lousiest best today! accidently did rm -rf in my home directory in cu3 where I run my program. Thankfully I had back up of those files that were deleted else would have been in a big trouble as I had made some changes. Seems like lack of sleep or sheer lousiness.
I guess more lack of sleep coz this happened with anshu too while firing printout job - instead of 1 page she fired the whole thesis!

morning walk and mangoes

went for a walk with fellow night outers- anshu and kuldip..only coz anshu is here playing nice songs i am awake..plan to go back for brkfast time ...
we got mangoes from mango tree ..abh ieating them

alive and kicking ...

cant beleive i am still awake ...havent slept properly for last few days..yest night was frustating though bcoz the damn code was not behaving as expected ..tonight it seemed so intially that there will be no fun coz my plots were not coming out well. But now the data is much better..
have to write one section -conclusion and future wrk coz need to submit it to ska for future wrk..

well did i tell the big news..got in MSN search :)..whether it is superstition or not ..i wont beleive i hae gotten in until my first day of wrk there...the team there seemed so nice and so friendly ..plan to say no to google for further round of interviews...i never thought ever that i wil lhave to take such a decision

gnuplot

Taking results of my data ...earlier it was not coming out well since the overhead was more than the test app exe time and i was geting really lazy improving it but now with a few changes in the nature of test apps this are working fine..got a great link for gnuplot :
Some good tips on how to have it directly as eps, how to display grids etc .good for beginners and for people with short term memory like me :) :

http://www.cs.uni.edu/Help/gnuplot/

Also if you would like two figures to be laser-printed on the same page, you may use the following shell script. Create file cat2 , below, and make the file executable by typing: unix% chmod +x cat2
      # cat2: Shell script for putting two Gnuplot plots on one page
echo %! > g.ps
echo gsave >> g.ps
echo 0 400 translate >> g.ps # for Gnuplot plots
cat $1 | sed -e "s/showpage//" >> g.ps
echo grestore >> g.ps
echo gsave >> g.ps
echo 0 090 translate >> g.ps # for Gnuplot plots
cat $2 >> g.ps
lpr -Phudsonlp1 g.ps

To combine two PostScript figures (plot1.ps and plot2.ps) on one page:

            cat2  plot1.ps  plot2.ps

faxing woes + last day at Persistent

tried faxing failed miserably :))) dont ask...scanned and sent to dad and saubhy..delegation is the power
Did one significant thing - gave up my back up job

done with the transcripts

after losing my gradesheet , retrieving new one paying in account section getting xeroxes , 2 bel juices and 1 plate tarbooj (water melon) its done ..the procedure here is simplified and nice with office people very helpful ...
anyways liked the xp coz it was very appetizing too :)

phews...

yest accidently deleted the only copy of the thesis paper tex file that i had written at night... but then found a paper.tex~ file created by the emacs editor before i had used the spell check..so i have all the data intact that was written before the spell check..nothing myuch really lost in tht case ...phew ...

last few days i realized the importance of fights in a relationships :).. it really brings you to your toes and make you try to understand the importance of the other person in your life ..the curve that i had seen in a psychology book is so true ...by that definition we are in a place that you resent certain differences ..a point where max breakups occur..but just a small walk from there and you start appreciating the individuality - what they call is the beginning of true love ..i feel we have taken that small walk...feels nice :)
Remembering the song by eternal flame:
"Close your eyes , gimme your hand
Do you feel my heart beating, do you understand,
Do you feel the same ?"

doing doaa chakkar for transcripts ..the thing is they want it for univ i dont have a univ but a confused organization that might hire me demanding for it ..anyways this person there is very helpful and guiding me all the way ...the payment section opens in another 15 mins ..will go and get hte job done after that ...

load load load

After declaration from niraj that he will give his defence on 8th may there has been an increase in the motivation and load level in lab junta ...the worst hit is apna amit madaan who had plans to go to his btech college for some degree work in the next 3 days. anshu has also started working as vi editor instead of yahoo msgr is more visible on her screen foreground.
so am i .. suddenly composing the "related work " chapter of my thesis doesnt seem so boring and working after dinner till late is making sense.
just had my cuppa of tea to help me stay awake for next 2 hours...
i am adopting a very perfectionist approach towards this whole writing business and hope that doesnot delay my job completely
my self demo wrked fine for text classsification s/w..the only problem is that if an application doesnot run the wrong node (the first node) of the workflow graph goes red ..will see where the bug is
..this day had some considerable output..

thesis writing

a few good links :
http://bbcr.uwaterloo.ca/~brecht/thesis-hints.html
http://unicorn.sfsu.edu/~murphy/suggestions.htm

Some excerpts form the first link which in turn is adapted from "The Guaranteed Mackworth Thesis Formula", by Alan Mackworth, revised by Tim Brecht
Abstract
  • one page stating what the thesis is about
  • highlight the contributions of the thesis

Chapter 1: Introduction (~5-10 pages)

  • Thesis Statement (one or two sentences)
    • What is your thesis about and what have you done?
    • If you have a hypothesis what is it?
    • How will you test (prove/disprove) your hypothesis?
  • Motivation
    • Why is this problem you've worked on important
  • Goals / Objectives
    • What are you trying to do and why?
    • How will you or the reader know if or when you've met your objectives?
  • **** Contributions *****
    • What is new, different, better, significant?
    • Why is the world a better place because of what you've done?
    • What have you contributed to the field of research?
    • What is now known/possible/better because of your thesis?
  • Outline of the thesis (optional)

Chapter 2: Background / Related Work (~8-20 pages)

  • More than a literature review
  • Organize related work - impose structure
  • Be clear as to how previous work being described relates to your own.
  • The reader should not be left wondering why you've described something!!
  • Critique the existing work - Where is it strong where is it weak? What are the unreasonable/undesirable assumptions?
  • Identify opportunities for more research (i.e., your thesis) Are there unaddressed, or more important related topics?
  • After reading this chapter, one should understand the motivation for and importance of your thesis

Chapter 3: Theory / Solution / Program / Problem (~15-30 pages)

  • continuing from Chapter 2 explain the issues
  • outline your solution / extension / refutation

Chapter 4: Implementation / Formalism (~15-30 pages)

  • not every thesis has or needs an implementation

Chapter 5: Results and Evaluation (~15-30 pages)

  • adequacy, efficiency, productiveness, effectiveness (choose your criteria, state them clearly and justify them)
  • be careful that you are using a fair measure, and that you are actually measuring what you claim to be measuring
  • if comparing with previous techniques those techniques must be described in Chapter 2
  • be honest in evaluation
  • admit weaknesses

Chapter 6: Conclusions and Future Work (~5-10 pages)

  • State what you've done and what you've found
  • Summarize contributions (achievements and impact)
  • Outline open issues/directions for future work

Bibliography / References

  • Include references to:
    • credit others for their work
    • help to distinguish your work from others
    • provide pointers to further detailed readings
    • support your claims (if evidence can be found in others work)
  • Ensure that ALL bibliographic entries are complete including: authors, title, journal or conference, volume and number of journals, date of publication and page numbers. Be careful to at least be consistent in punctuation.
  • Learn how to use a good typesetting program that can track and format bibliographic references (e.g., groff, latex, frame).
  • Within the text of the thesis, a reference with a number of people can be referred to as Lastname et al. (where et al appears in italics and the al is followed by a period).
  • My personal view is that URL's are not valid bibliographic references. They and their contents change and they often contain material that has not been refereed.

Appendix

  • Include technical material that would disrupt the flow of the thesis.
  • Included for curious or disbelieving readers

and there was still no communication ....

may be its the cooler but I get up tired every morning after having installed it in my room. figured that i was not the only one with this symptom..
just was collecting some text articles (corpus) for text classification and came across some good articels that I forgot the orig intention of reaching till them :).
plan to indulge in some thesis writing as well. had brkfast in hall 7 today. .dosa ..but it was not as good as i had remembered it when i last ate it. prob its the summer or it is the ...

no call

went for a walk in the eve all alone felt nice getting in touch with myself getting my priorities right. thinking about life and trees in general...
wrk got really boring ..also have started writing.
had an amazing dinner - it was simple daal roti and pyaaz achaar and ofc anshu's fav sabzi (lauki) but it was good esp the dal.
but its 11.22 and i am hungry again..god wats wrong with me?

long weekend this time

We have mahaveer jayanti today and hence a holiday. Following this is Sat and Sun so in all a long wekend. Waise it doesnt matter essentially coz we work all the day everyday. No concept of weekends for students.

Am busy developing some test apps - trying to do come text classification and topic generation using my appliccation paralleization s/w. I realizer the potential of it now more than when I had started doing it. Usability is not the only reason to have it here.

Was thinking about life in general - aint we all alone at the end of day. Ofc there are pple with whom you share pieces of your life but that doesnt mean you share the life with them. Your feeling are your own. Your issues are your own. And you choose whether to share them or tackle them on your own. Was trying to recount a number of things that only I know or I have felt and no one else knows about it. Well realized that I am pretty a big mouth but still there were a lot of things that only I know. Mom comes very close to knowing the most of me and then there is a big lag and the rest follow. I guess I am maturing up (?) coz now there are a lot of things that only I know or feel and noone else does. I just prefer to keep them to myself and am pretty cool about it now.

asim got spot award

"Asim had been an active member in the team contributing to the operations to a very great extent. Joined as a fresher, learnt the environment thoroughly, and today he had developed an automated system to monitor the Production reporting instance refresh that happens twice a day. This helps the team to have a single window monitoring of the refresh process. His single handed Scripting is greatly appreciated. (Shell script that gets executed every 100secs and displays the status/progress of the refresh in HTML Format)"

Day full of installation woes but good thing was that i was able to install some softwares (wrd and adobe) peacefully - no great shakes you say but small successes like these means a lot to someone who cannot install a pack for last 2 days.
Realized that i havent read newspapers from last 2-3 days (including sundays!).
Btw google guys have called to bangalore. Mom is worried and wants to accompany me ..asim told her that it will cost 7K for one side so her face became very small :(. Somewhere I wud love it if she acocmpanies me coz we will have fun together :) except for the cost involved. I would like her to decide on not to come not because she feels the money is more but bcoz she believes i can handle it on my own.

scalapack woes

am trying so hard tro install scalapack.. my guide i ma sure wont let me go unless i get this thing done.. and i am sure he will expect much much more from me....
anyways i must say their archives lib tdidnt wrk for me and i was trying to install everytnig from scratch coz that wud have been a longer procesdure. however i am doing it now ..have no other option left. if this work then its fine nahee to i will not make any more efforts...
and it didnt wrk..the same set of errors :((((

sat and all alone

i had wrked from my room all day yest and realized how boring it is to work alone. infact it was not even productive.
So i came to lab today early morning and its around 11 now and all the nocturnal labmates havent yet woken up.. Sone waale jaag jaa re!!!

--
In the morning had a conversation with him abt how he will try getting into masters in finance- a 1 yr course in berkeley or columbia. I was actually very impressed the way he was objectively seeing his prospects in US and formulating a strategy for his career to ensure a seat there inspite of not having some 5 yrs xp the admission committee generally look for. I like it when people instead of giving up, fight to take things in their control. I have generally seen that people who put up a fight against circumstances always win. It is not easy to beat the human will.
I just hope my MS things works out nahee to i will be really disappointed not for myself but for people back home esp dad who has almost believed that I will be going to Redmond.

My own disappointment I guess I can handle and give credit for this to saurabh(who is on his own trip right now btw) who has chillaxed me a lot in life - helped me appreciate the nomadic kindof outlook in life which is not bad as long as you are enjoying it :).

chat with asim

had a long chat with asim ..there is nothing more fun than chatting with the family..he is getting an award for writing a fundu script. he said 2 other pple who had no contribution in making the script are sharing the award coz they were in same module and he being one of those pple who care a lot abt abt credit was not pleased. in his wrds : "unhone vi to chod cat bhi nahee kia" but i cud see that at some level his pleasure of the script being recognized to get the award is more ..cheers to that spirit chotu bro ..
i like the way he is passionate abt the work.. he has opened a dba forum in vado and though he is the only member he keeps on writing and adding lotsa useful info in that..
i like that idea - whatever you do , do it whole heartedly.
i personally uphold this funda a lot- you are recognized by the work you do and at some level your work represents you..now wud you like to compromise with your own identity ?

hall 8 hall day and cherry's b'day

went to hall 8's hall day -invited by pathak and bhaskar raman sir were also there with his family. Some bunch of college kids under the name of tantra band were also there and they were singing so much out of key..the junta was actually booing them :).
having bhaskar raman around was not that much fun coz he was very interested in the details of my thesis and when i am taking a break from work i really dont like discussing it at length with anyone and he was not stopping ..infact i was more uncomfortable bcoz he started asking me questions whose answers i didnt know like about .NEt web service composition ..i mean who is that.
--
anyway the torture ended with finding cherry who was looking pretty all dressed up for her b'day ..i had walked to hall8 instead of taking my cycle there (a precautino that i take even though it was anshu's cycle that was stolen) so pathak thought i shldnt walk back alone and was gracious enough to escort me back..he told me the details of farewell which i dont know how it would fare. coz no prep from senior's side here who are supposed to put up a program. anyways then went to cc canteen to celebrate cherry's bday with her classmates and came back and slept.
went to rave today saw this movie "Lucky". The movie was cute ..basically the vulnerabilty of the girl and machoism of the hero came out well and they complemented each other pretty well..
now back in my room..prob its high time to think abt something called thesis coz i knowthe eve is gonna be busy

abt pple and relationships

have you ever felt the usurmountable desire to talk to someone only because you are waiting to fight and after fighting the feeling is much worse than the intial desire to talk.
i sometimes wonder when my expectations from people overpower me so much that I stop giving out what is expected out of me from them .... i sometimes feel that poeple wo are closest to me have to face the most "difficult" me all the time that they are betteroff not being so close to me...
or is it just that expecting from the questions like "how are you feeling today" -when not feeling well, "how was it" - when having gone through a great experience - from them is not really expecting too much..
i remember one of my friends and seniors siddhesh told me that attention is the most important thing a relationship requires ..i realize that it is so much true... to add to that i really must say that there should be some mutual respect also ..u gotta believe the other person coz you believe the other person ...they day you start feeling that the other person is just saying things for saying things you stop beleiving the person and even the genuine words start sounding fake ..and sometimes you end up in a similar act ...this has already happened earlier with one of my friends in kanpur, i just hope this doesnt happen again with other people in my life....

every paper has a resting place...

my guide has asked me to start writing a paper on my thesis work. While doing survey(which i should have done earlier) for the related work, I realized that there are so many clones of my work already which didnt exist when I had started earlier... i guess now it is important to state differentiating features of my work more concretely for people to take notice ......

I know Daddy's password! and some questions

I know Daddy's password! While my brother-in-law was tapping away on his home computer, his ten-year-old daughter sneaked up behind him. Then she turned and ran into the kitchen, squealing to the rest of the family, 'I know Daddy's password! I know Daddy's password!'
'What is it? her sisters asked eagerly.
Proudly she replied, 'Asterisk, asterisk, asterisk, asterisk, asterisk!'

TWO TOUGH QUESTIONS

Question 1:

If you knew a woman who was pregnant, who had 8 kids already,
three who were deaf, two who were blind, one mentally retarded, and she
had syphilis, would you recommend that she have an abortion?

Read the next question before looking at the response for this one.

Question 2:

It is time to elect a new world leader, and only your vote counts. Here
are the facts about the three candidates.

Candidate A
Associates with crooked politicians, and consults with
astrologists. He's had two mistresses. He also chain smokes and
drinks 8 to 10 martinis a day.

Candidate B
He was kicked out of office twice, sleeps until noon, used opium
in college and drinks a quart of whiskey every evening.

Candidate C
He is a decorated war hero. He's a vegetarian, doesn't smoke,
drinks an occasional beer and never cheated on his wife.

Which of these candidates would be your choice?

Decide first... no peeking, then scroll down for the response.

Candidate A is Franklin D. Roosevelt.

Candidate B is Winston Churchill.

Candidate C is Adolph Hitler.

And, by the way, on your answer to the abortion question:

If you said YES.....

.....you just killed Beethoven.

Pretty interesting isn't it? Makes a person think before judging
someone.
This is exactly the reason we should never come to a decision about
anything by just looking on the surface.

bookey of roses

got them the day I had a big fight with saubhy(one sided - i fought he listened as usual). Must admit that it really made my day :) ). Also got handsfree which as usual was not made for my nokia 2100 model :).

trip to delhi ....

so i forgot to add that i finally got a call from MSN :). I did go to delhi. Man all sorts of things happened (you shld read my private posts :p ). I thought of giving up so much ..but well Anshu talked me some sense and I thought I will go :).
Well reached there at 6.30 and from station went to Hyatt. These guys then left for refreshing themselves and I was on my own. Never was the ladies washroom so luxuriously used.. i took all my time to get ready - infact tried diff hairstyles too :).
After that thought of eating some food that i got from home and then thought ..what the heck ..lets pamper self and have breakfast at their tea corner.
Well went there and it was anything but tea corner. It was facing their swimming pool and there were walls with waterfall covering the other side of it. Well had my brkfast. It was good and wrth 340 bucks(tea was 100) :). Gave 20 bucks tip.
Well after that went for the interview and I don't know but some wisdom dawned on me and I wasz able to answer all the questions promptly and with lots of ease- if i was interviewing myself i wud have thought i was fundu :). Well the first interview was taken by Gaurav Sareen and I fared really well. Then Leon Wong took my second interview. I did well there too thugh there were a bit of hiccups while coding. He extended me the offer though very informally. He said congrats you have done very well in our interviews and we would be interested in having you. However this is subject to appoval from my manager, the visa issues and other things that normally work out fine if you are a good candidate and you are.

Well the best part was ofcourse the lunch - Lunch in Hyatt - Barbeque in Hyatt - wow! it was simply good.
So finally Bill Gates indeed paid something for me he he.

Later in the night was Google's interview and it was taken by someone called Michael. It went real real bad. If I was interviewing myself I wud have felt that I am wasting my time. They asked me only those questions whose answers I had forgotten.

Events like these make me believe in destiny.

admad and msn

participated in the admad contest made an ad for people's airlines that target middleclass families and persuade/lure them for aircraft flights instead of travelling in 3ac or 2ac.
The concept is :

SCENE

VIDEO

1

An Indian bridegroom's face is shown. The face is covered with sehra.

Background music: Music typical in Indian wedding with dhol (a bit bhangra type)

Voice 1(male): "Arre chandu ko bhi to nachao. Bhai ki shaadi mein nachega nahee kya"

2

Two-three people dancing. They are clad as baraatis from a rural wedding but wearing very flashy clothes. Their dance is like dances in Indian baraat.

Background music: Music typical in Indian wedding with dhol (a bit bhangra type)

3

Cut to the bridegroom again but this time the scene covers two more people sitting next to him - his parents. The mother is offering him a laddu and the father who is in the corner seat is picking up a pan that is being served in a tray. Only the tray and the hand holding it is shown in the scene.

Background music: Music typical in Indian wedding with dhol (a bit bhangra type)

Mother saying: Beta laddu kha le.

Father saying (Bihari tone): Hum to bhai paan khayenge ...

4

Now the camera follows the hand holding the tray and the person serving the paan is shown who turns out to be a smartly dressed air-hostess.

The camera moves away showing 2-3 more air hostesses - and the setting is shown clearly which is actually the inside of a luxurious plane.

Background music is slowly fading.

Other air hostess : "Aapke liye chai ya coffee, sir ?"

5

Above scene of people enjoying and dancing continues.

Male voice: " Experience the luxury of air travel at the cost of train fares".

6

Graphics: People's Airways

Graphics (super): We take you higher at the lowest prices.

Male voice: "People's Airways

Did not get throu MSN's online C Test. o think of it, I got out in the most unreliable round of thier's. For all they know a group of pple were sitting and answering thier questions. Anyways I had earlier thought it was a spam and had given the whole test very very lightly. Teaches me a lesson. And as the saying goes : "mann ka ho to achcha , mann ka na ho to jyada achcha" - roughly translated "if its according to your wish then it's good, else it is better coz then it's according to god's wish and he does only good things to you:)"
Seems like I am getting into this superstition that I get jobs only in alternate companies :)). Though given a choice I wouldnot like to beleive it coz one comes to believe whatever one repeats to oneself sufficiently often, whether the statement be true of false. It comes to be dominating thought in one's mind. So I better be optimistic about getting into my dream company Google though optimism is associated with success and happiness than any other. Lot's of philosophy I guess. The bright side is no adventure for me and wil lconc. on my thesis. Will give it a better shape than it has right now- some justice to all the hardwork I had put in earlier.

C++ file size and time diff

Most of my coding has been in java but thought of writing the test apps in C++. After all I am a student and C++ is my first love (okay its you baby :)).
Ove thing that I cud eaily do in Java was to get the file size. FILE.length function. But in C++ there was no way except seeking to the end of the function. So here is the code for it:
-----
static long getFileSize(FILE *stream)
{
long curpos = 0L;
long length = 0L;

/* Save current position */
curpos = ftell(stream);

/* Point to end of stream, offset from beginning */
fseek(stream, 0L, SEEK_END);
length = ftell(stream);

/* Restore previous position */
fseek(stream, curpos, SEEK_SET);

return length;
}

To call:
FILE *file1 ;
file1= fopen(argv[1],"r");
inputSize += (double)((double) fileUtil::getFileSize(file1))/1024;// in KB

Also wrote a code get the time in real good granularity (nanosecs)
struct timespec t1,t2;
clock_gettime(CLOCK_REALTIME,&t1);

// CODE TO BE PROFILED
..............
clock_gettime(CLOCK_REALTIME,&t2);
double msec=(double)(t2.tv_sec - t1.tv_sec) * 1000 + (double)((double)(t2.tv_nsec - t1.tv_nsec) * (double)(0.000001));

Note: For this include time.h and compile with the library -lrt

mishri muth

Went to mishri mutt/muth (?) yest . It was a job treat from all us marathi mandal seniors to the juniors. Actually to think of it I think I have 3-4 job treats till date and still my job is not finalyzed. Life it seems it has its own irony.
Anyways that place was great- went on a swing, a bullock card ride, applied mehendi (though the design was bad- mebbie anshu's mehendi has set my stds very high now :) ).But the amazing part were the rajasthani dances by the folk pple there and the way the dragged me and jaya into it. I let my hair lose and really started dancing with them :). It was so much fun.
Then there were a bunch of pple called "nut"(a complete non-english work) who walks on ropes and does all sorts of acrobatics. With them there were two very very small kids and when I saw them performing instead of enjoying strangely enough I was feeling sad. They were so small and all their concern was to perform well and impress the audience, at a age where there should not be an concern :(. Sometimes I feel so much to do something for them and in my own mind I feel I am such a hypocrite coz I just think about doing it but never get down to do it :((. But I am sure one day I will do it, may be that will be the most fulfilling achievement of my life than getting a job in google (if at all I get it!) ..okay shutup hyppo

vids house

The most amazing house I could even deam of. Right from the country side feel that it gives from outside with brick walls and old lanterns. To a very warm, cozy and esp a very indian feel it gives from inside with sofas and carpets and lanterns. Every corner right from curtain to fans with lights to wallpapers have been taken care of.I loved the pics on the walls too. Will attach the pics someday.Even the kitchen is so beautiful. If I get a chance to live there I wud surely learn to cook. And Vids is in that photo she surely looks like a kid. Who can say that petite girl owns such a beautiful house. I am soo very happy to see her so well settled in her life. I really hope she gets all the happiness and much much more. Touch wood for that :)
